The great European cinema returns protagonist to Taormina: Luc Besson, Emir Kusturicae Terry Gilliam received his career Nations Award last night in the suggestive setting of the ancient theater. Besson, awarded by the regional councilor for tourism Elvira Amata, returns to the pearl of the Ionian after about 40 years from the famous film that he wandered here: “The Grand Bleu is still here – he said – it is strange, it seems that it has been here a few years ago, the perfume, the people, everything is perfect”. And on the next commitments he does not unbalance: “How to ask a cook in the kitchen what he is cooking”. On the artificial intelligence applied to the cinema: “It is like when the color arrived, a new tool, we must use it in an interesting way”.
To reward Kusturica the Undersecretary to the relations with Parliament Matilde Siracusano. For the artist to return to Italy means to think of illustrious colleagues: “I am in the land of De Sica, Fellini and now Sorrentino, Garrone, Veronesi, I wish Italian cinema long live”. But he is more skeptical about the European one: “I don’t think there is a properly European cinema, when someone wants to insult you, he tells you to be a European director; therefore better to go to the nation in the nation. There are many people who are making great films. I would say much more Italian than European. I also love Adriano Celentano”.
Gilliam, awarded by the Taorminese mayor Cateno De Luca, recalled that he had been about half a century ago for his first film: “They all became older, I in particular – ironizes – I don’t see too much change. It is always beautiful, the prizes actually don’t interest me much, but they give me access to beautiful places like this”. And on the next projects he anticipates: “I want to make an apocalyptic film, but they are all very busy in Israel, Iran … this is the problem”. It promotes platforms for cinema, but “the experience inside the theaters, with many people, is another thing, you feel small compared to the big screen; I remember people in the metro in London who watched Star Wars on the iPhone. The movies are mirror of the company but many times the films imitate society; at the moment I am not coming too many interesting films, I would like to be more surprised”.
