There is a problem not defined in the Defr (economic and financial document of the Calabria Region), for Gioia Tauro: that of rail freight traffic. The Defr limits itself to making a completely generic and perhaps imprecise statement: «The future travels by rail. The symbolic work will be the Santomarco Tunnel, an infrastructure worth over 2 billion euros that will allow the high-speed train to reach Cosenza and connect to the port of Gioia Tauro”. It can therefore be hoped that the freight trains leaving the port of Gioia Tauro will travel quickly and take advantage of the new tunnel.
