The Strategic Community Co-Design Laboratory for a sustainable and inclusive future is presented. In the first experimental meeting, the students of the Product Design course – of which Professor Francesca Giglio of the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, Department of Architecture and Design, CdL Design is responsible – presented proposals for smart street furniture for urban regeneration interventions, for the historic center and the seaside village. Proposals that integrate the use of renewable energy sources, rainwater recovery, recycled materials and 3D printing, inclusive design for vulnerable groups. With the participation of the mayor of Fuscaldo, Giacomo Middea, the active collaboration of the municipal administration, associations and citizens, a dynamic debate was started to contribute to a strategic community design. The founding principle of the Laboratory is to adopt a participatory approach, expressed even more effectively through co-design practices, in which each voice has significance, contributing to the construction of shared projects. A moment of great social value, therefore, which promotes collaboration between citizens, professionals, institutions and businesses, putting the needs of the community and the principles of environmental and social sustainability at the centre. The interdisciplinary Product Design course promotes a design approach that integrates sustainability principles with advanced technologies to create products, services and systems that meet user needs, in an environmentally, economically and socially responsible manner. This year, Fuscaldo was chosen as a case study. In this case, the following areas of intervention were selected: Don Franco Castagnaro square, the seafront, the municipal playground, the historic center. Subsequently, after the presentation of the projects still in progress, a debate was launched full of interest, curiosity and reflections, useful for understanding the needs of citizens and co-designing the proposed solutions, guaranteeing aspects of inclusiveness and accessibility in the proposed interventions. The common will was manifested in the intent to converge towards effective solutions that reflect the values and priorities of those who live and work in the area. The Department of Architecture and Design (dAeD) and the related CdLs (Design, Architecture, Design for Mediterranean cultures. Product/Space/Communication), carry out an action of knowledge transfer and constant and significant experimentation on the local territory, through activities of Third Mission. On this occasion, the students had an important opportunity to apply the theoretical skills acquired during the course, confronting themselves with a reality that welcomed them and listened to them with a proactive spirit. The importance of collaboration between institutions, citizens, associations and all interested stakeholders was highlighted in the conclusions of the meeting, opening up the possibility of creating further new opportunities for meeting/discussions, as a principle to be adopted for the improvement of the common good and for the sharing of scenarios of innovation and quality of life closely connected to the specificities and peculiarities of the Fuscalda area. The Laboratory therefore represents an opportunity for collaborative continuity with the municipal administration, with associations and citizens, which will delve into thematic focuses shared with the population. The works of the Course, once completed, will be displayed in an exhibition in Fuscaldo in a few months.
