Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (leader of the Infrastructure Hub of the FS Group) has started the tender for the executive design and implementation of the “Electrification of the Sibari-Crotone section” works of the Metaponto-Reggio Calabria Centrale railway line” (Lot 2A).
The tender has a value of approximately 47 million euros financed with funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan.
The intervention consists in the construction of approximately 112 km of electrification of the existing Sibari – Crotone section, through the construction of 8 medium voltage electrical substations and installation of the system for electric railway tractionthus completing the preparatory works for setting up the poles already underway along the line starting from 2018.
The tender represents the second of the three award procedures envisaged to create the three functional lots of the complex investment project “Enhancement of the Lamezia Terme-Catanzaro Lido-Dorsale Jonica connection” approved by the Extraordinary Government Commissioner with Ordinance no. 4 of 25/ 09/2023.
For the completion of the work he was appointed as Extraordinary Government Commissioner Roberto Pagone.
Electrification will contribute to standardizing the characteristics of the Calabrian railway network in terms of traction systems, thus allowing the extensive use of the new electric trains, and to creating the conditions to improve the quality of connections with the areas of the Ionian coast with a strong tourist vocation . Furthermore, the electrification process of railway lines contributes to reducing polluting emissions and their impact on the climate.
