Rescue intervention in the late evening of January 1st in the waters north of the port of Tropea, where the CP 808 patrol boat of the Vibo Valentia Coast Guard rescued a fisherman who was adrift due to a failure in the engine of his vessel.
The alarm of the family members and the start of the search
The search activity began promptly after a telephone report received by the Vibo Valentia Coast Guard Operations Room from the family of the man, a seventy-year-old local man, worried about his failure to return home.
The operations proved to be particularly complex due to the worsening weather and sea conditions and the impossibility of contacting the missing fisherman by telephone.
The emergency signal and rescue
The identification of the damaged unit was possible thanks to the launch of a signal rocket by the fisherman himself, which allowed the rescuers to precisely locate the vessel.
The Coast Guard patrol boat then reached the vessel. Once the man’s good health conditions were ascertained, the vessel was escorted to the moorings of the port of Tropea, with the support of a private nautical vehicle which provided the towing.
Coordination of relief efforts
A nautical vessel from the Porto di Tropea Company also took part in the operations and, by land, personnel from the Tropea Carabinieri Station
