The agreement between Washington and Tehran is a done deal. A few hours later, two official announcements certify the turning point: American President Donald Trump proclaims the conclusion of the agreement with Iran and authorizes the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, while Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announces the achievement of a real peace agreement, with the official signature set for next Friday 19 June in Switzerland.
Trump: «Let the oil flow»
«The agreement with the Islamic Republic of Iran is now concluded. Congratulations to everyone! Thus Donald Trump, in a post on his social network Truth, claimed the outcome of the negotiations. «I hereby fully authorize the opening of the Strait of Hormuz to free transit and, at the same time, authorize the immediate lifting of the United States naval blockade. Ships of the world, start your engines. Let the oil flow!”, wrote the president, signing in full.
The reopening of Hormuz and the lifting of the US naval blockade on Iranian ports were among the key points of the draft Islamabad memorandum, the outline of understanding that opens the second phase of negotiations between the two countries.
Sharif’s announcement and signing on June 19
The prime minister of Pakistan, mediator of the agreement, made the broader announcement. “Following intensive talks, we are pleased to announce that the Peace Agreement between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran has been reached,” Shehbaz Sharif wrote in X. “Both sides have declared an immediate and permanent cessation of military operations on all fronts, including those in Lebanon. The official signing ceremony will take place on Friday 19 June in Switzerland.”
The reference to the Lebanese front comes a few days after the Israeli raid on the southern suburbs of Beirut, which had raised fears of a setback in the negotiations and provoked Trump’s harsh reaction towards Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. With the joint announcement, the formal signing of the agreement is now expected by the end of the week.
