Matteo Berrettini is defeated by Taylor Fritz and exits in the second round of the US OpenThe Italian, number 44 in the ATP rankings, lost 6-3, 7-6, 6-1 to the American (no. 12) in just over two hours of play. The Italian was disappointed at the end of the match: “I’m fine now, but it was a shame that I couldn’t train and play some tournaments before coming here. I had phlebitis in a vein in my calf: it was missing from the list! I didn’t even know what it was, it got hard and I thought it was the muscle. Now it’s getting better, it didn’t bother me too much in the tournament but it bothered me in the preparation for the tournament. I would have liked to train more and play more but it wasn’t possible. I’m proud that I was able to play and get over the pain and discomfort. Given my history there is always the fear of making things worse, instead it was an important mental test. Obviously I didn’t lose for this reason, but training little in view of a Slam is never the ideal thing. I’m signed up for all the tournaments in China and Tokyo. I really want to play. If I were to be called up for the Davis Cup I would be very happy to represent Italy, otherwise I will go to China straight away”.
