An area of 11,000 square meters used as an illegal landfill, inside which 70 cubic meters of waste of all kinds were piled up, including a large and dangerous quantity of asbestos. This is the outcome of the latest operation conducted by the Fiamme Gialle of the Provincial Command of the Guardia di Finanza of Vibo Valentia, which has long been at the forefront in monitoring and protecting the territory against environmental crimes.

The blitz and the discovery of eternit

The operation took place as part of a plan of targeted checks on local construction sites and on ongoing contracts in the province. During the inspections, the financiers of the Vibo Valentia Group found various anomalies in the management of construction waste, until they came across the macro-landfill.

The checks on the site, conducted with the technical support of the ARPACAL (Regional Agency for the Protection of the Environment of Calabria) staff, confirmed the degradation scenario: the waste, including the dangerous asbestos products, had been deposited without any precautions or safety measures, in total disregard of the regulations in force.

The seizure order

At the request of the local Public Prosecutor’s Office, which fully embraced the investigative approach of the Fiamme Gialle, the Court of Vibo Valentia ordered the preventive seizure of the entire area of 11 thousand square meters to block the continuation of the crime and avoid further environmental risks.

The intervention is part of a broader strategy of the Guardia di Finanza aimed at combating environmental crimes, considered an absolute priority not only for the protection of the local ecosystem, but above all for the protection of citizens’ public health.
