The Regional Council of Calabria unanimously approved, during yesterday's session, the motion in support of the Vibo library system presented by the regional councilors Antonio Lo Schiavo (president of the Mixed Group – Freely Progressives) e Raffaele Mammoliti (Pd) and countersigned by all the group leaders of the assembly, which commits the regional council «to identifying the most suitable legal-administrative solution to re-establish the Vibo library system, preparing the necessary documents for its transformation into the legal guise most suited to the relaunch of the 'Body”.
The motion, as mentioned, met with unanimous approval from the chamber which accepted the arguments of the first signatory councilors on the issue need to safeguard a cultural body of primary importance on a regional level and beyond. «It is – Lo Schiavo recalled in his speech – the largest public library in Calabria, already the hub of the regional library service which has around 160 regional, municipal and university state libraries as well as the Mattia Preti cultural center of the regional council. Promoter of initiatives of national importance, such as the “Reading and Writing Festival”, the SBV oversaw, on behalf of the Calabria Region, participation in the Turin and Naples Book Fairs. It is therefore an organization at the service of Calabrian culture and of the Region itself. In the past – added Lo Schiavo – the Regional Council was called upon to save from collapse, re-establishing them under a new legal/administrative guise, numerous instrumental bodies or bodies in any case participated by the Region. All the more reason the SBV can be saved.”
Among the various options mentioned by Lo Schiavo, «there is also that of promoting a Foundation participated by the Calabria Region and open to the membership of the local authorities of the territory as well as bodies representing the entrepreneurial forces and third sector bodies». «I am convinced – commented Lo Schiavo following the approval of the motion – that the Calabria Region is in a position to guarantee the survival of an organization that means a lot to Vibo Valentia and Calabria. Today's vote may represent an important step in a new path aimed at restoring dignity to the institution, its workers and its users, but more generally to Calabrian culture which extremely needs to be supported and encouraged with concrete actions. I trust that the Regional Council will perceive the importance of the issue and will take action to identify the most suitable solution to secure and relaunch the Vibo library system”.
