A young worker reduced to conditions of exploitation by taking advantage of his state of need, and failure to comply with workplace safety regulations.
These are accusations for which two entrepreneurs from Brolo were convicted, held responsible for illicit intermediation and exploitation of labor (commonly understood as gangmastering, ndc) and personal injuries towards two employees.
Carmelo D’Amico, recognized as the de facto employer, was sentenced to four years in prison and a 5,000 euro fine, while his son Basilio D’Amico, in his capacity as owner of the company, was sentenced to three years and four months plus a 2,800 euro fine.
The charges, referring to the period between 2020 and 2022, concern the working conditions to which a young man originally from Ghana was subjected, who was paid a paltry salary that was clearly unbalanced compared to the hours actually worked. The worker, according to the accusation, was therefore exposed to serious risks of accidents due to the use of tools and various machinery without the necessary provision of personal protective equipment and was hosted in makeshift accommodation created inside a container lacking health and hygiene requirements.
