Who is Yulia Navalnaya?

Yulia Navalnaya is the wife of Alexei Navalny, one of Russia’s most prominent political opponents. An activist and a prominent figure in the anti-corruption movement led by her husband, Yulia has been a constant supporter of Navalny in his campaigns against the Russian government. Recently, she was accused of involvement in an extremist group and placed on the international wanted list by Russian authorities.

Poisoning and arrest

In August 2020, Navalny was poisoned with a Novichok nerve agent during a domestic flight in Russia. After initial treatment in Russia, he was flown to Germany for medical treatment, where he remained in a coma for several weeks. Investigations by several international bodies concluded that the poisoning was orchestrated by Russian security agents, a charge the Kremlin has denied.

Return to Russia and detention

Despite the obvious risk to his safety, Navalny returned to Russia in January 2021. Upon his arrival, he was immediately arrested for alleged parole violations related to an old conviction, which many international observers and human rights organizations believe was politically motivated.

Conviction and imprisonment

Death in prison
