A 6.1 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Sindirgi, located in Balikesir province in western Turkey, late in the evening: the national disaster management agency announced. The earthquake, recorded at 10.48pm local time, was also felt in several other cities in the west of the country, including Istanbul and Izmir, but no victims were reported. “Following the earthquake, which was also felt in the surrounding provinces, Afad and all the teams from our competent institutions immediately started working on the field,” said Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya. Images of at least one destroyed building and other damaged buildings in Sindirgi were broadcast by the private Dha news agency. Last August an earthquake of the same magnitude in Sindirgi caused one death and twenty-nine injuries. Turkey is crossed by several faults that have caused numerous tragedies in the past. In February 2023, the south-east of the country was hit by a violent earthquake that killed at least 53,000 people and devastated Antakya, formerly known as Antioch.
