Among the 79 member countries of the International Criminal Court (CPI) who signed the joint declaration against the sanctions imposed by the United States to the international body, there are also the main European nations, including Germany, France, Spain And Great Britain. However, Italy does not appear among the signatories.

The joint document criticizes the US sanctions hard, claiming that these “They would seriously compromise all situations currently under investigation, since the Court may have to close its offices on the field”. In addition, the risk of greater impunity for the most serious crimes and an erosion of the state of international law.

The initiative of the declaration started from a group of five countries: Slovenia, Luxembourg, Mexico, Sierra Leone and Vanuatu. Among the signatories, which represent about two thirds of the States that have ratified the CPI Rome Statute, almost all members of the European Union stand out. In addition to Great Britain and Canadahave joined France, Germany, Belgium, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Luxembourg, Estonia, Spain, Cyprus, Latvia, Croatia, Austria and Malta.

The absence of Italy from the list raises questions about its position towards the US CPI and sanctions.
