The MEP Giusi Princi He has been appointed vice -president of the interior of the European Parliament on the coastal and insular regions, with delegation to the Mediterranean. The MEP is also the only Italian to be part of the board of this important intergroup, a significant result to bring Calabria and Southern Italy, with their peculiarities, at the center of the European Agenda.
“Being the only Italian in the board of this intergroup – says the Calabrian MEP – represents a huge responsibility, but also a great opportunity to give voice to the coastal and insular regions, often marginalized in European policies. I thank the European People’s Party ( Ppe) and the president of the inter -group, Christophe Clergeaufor the trust placed in me. I will engage with the colleagues of the Intergroup – he adds – so that the Mediterranean will return to being a strategic priority for the European Union. It will also be essential -he continues -, to establish a strong and constructive link with the Mediterranean commissioner, Dubravka Sumica, A new role strongly desired in this new legislature from the PPE and in fact assumed by a Croatian member of the same political family. With the commissioner – explains Giusi Princi – I have already had a profitable meeting to deepen strategic issues for the Mediterranean and dialogue will strengthen even more because of active involvement in this parliamentary forum. I will also work to strengthen the dialogue between the intergroup and the intermediate commission of the conference of the peripheral and maritime regions (CPMR), led by the President Roberto Occhiutotogether with which we will promote events and initiatives in Calabria, in order to make the Region a nerve point for the entire southern Europe, with a focus on investments in infrastructure and culture. The goal is to enhance southern Italy as the fulcrum of academic, cultural and social opportunities, as well as economic, for the benefit of the whole enlarged Mediterranean basin “.
“I will work for the specificities of Calabria and Southern Italy to be protected with force within the new pact for the Mediterranean that the European Union is about to develop, promoting the protection of linguistic and cultural minorities and ensuring concrete support for infrastructure development The intent – it is to contribute significantly to the definition of policies that respond to the needs of the coastal and insular regions, paying particular attention to the Mediterranean as an engine of growth and international cooperation “.
