«The procedure for the Bridge over the Strait project was brought to a sudden halt by the Court of Auditors but the game is not over yet and it is time to make the citizens’ voices heard loudly and defend the Messina community. For this reason, for a few weeks now, the No Ponte Capo Peloro Committee, Alleanza-Verdi Sinistra, M5S, Pd, and CGIL have started collecting signatures to urge the mayor of Messina Federico Basile, who behaves as if the construction of the Bridge over the Strait were inevitable, to take all the necessary initiatives to defend the territory, including the judicial one. If construction work on the Bridge were to begin, the damage and inconvenience for citizens would be incalculable. And political responsibility will fall not only on those who supported the work, but also on those who did not oppose it with the necessary and due firmness.”
This is supported by the representatives of the “No Ponte Capo Peloro” Committee, promoters of the petition. «The publicized observations of the Municipality of Messina for the railway works connected to the Bridge over the Strait in the Contesse area, rather than a specific challenge to RFi’s design choices, are in reality a series of complaints with the Ministry and with RFi for not having been involved, despite the significant environmental, social and economic impacts of the works. A confirmation of the passive role held up to now by the mayor – states the Committee -, which is why we ask that Basile take a decisive position in defense of the city. Because if the Bridge project were to pass, it is certain that the 20 construction sites planned from north to south will overwhelm our daily lives and our territory for years. Other than “Salva Contesse” and “Messina protagonist”. Let’s save Messina, from Contesse to Torre Faro.” (ld)
