Ars tries again. Four months after the failed attempt during the approval of the Budget, the law that would cancel the gratuitous role of president of the Free Consortia is back on the agenda.
It is a small step forward in the direction of bringing the Free Consortia closer to the old Provinces, of which they have been the natural heirs since 2015. The free nature of the tasks was one of the pillars of the reform wanted by Crocetta. And now the law that will be put to the vote between next Tuesday and Thursday instead provides that «the president of the free Consortium is granted an allowance, paid from the budget of the institution, in an amount equal to that of the mayor of the capital municipality».
The leadership of the 6 Free Consortia (Palermo, Catania and Messina are Metropolitan Cities) is reserved for the mayors of the local municipalities, elected with the second level voting system. The presidents, elected for the first time a year ago, will have to opt for the mayor’s salary or that of the head of the Consortium if the law is approved.
