The scholarship in memory of professors Rosario and Filippina Maida, prominent figures of the Catanzaro community and of the school itself, returns again this year, intended for deserving students of the fifth classes of the “L.Siciliani-G.De Nobili” high school campus, led by the director Filomena Rita Folino, in order to honor the memory and values that the Maida professors have transmitted during their professional and civil life. The award ceremony of the second edition of the Rosario and Filippina Maida scholarship will be held on Tuesday 19 May 2026, at 10.30 am, in the concert hall of Palazzo De Nobili. During the ceremony, in addition to the interventions of institutions and authorities, there will be a musical interlude with violin and sax, curated by Annamaria Paonessa and Pamela Aloise.

Prof. Rosario Maida, already a proud former student of the “Siciliani” high school and graduate in Agricultural Sciences, represented a key figure for the city of Catanzaro. An esteemed teacher and organizer of school trade unionism – of which he was co-founder and regional secretary for the CGIL – he translated his civil passion into political commitment as a municipal councilor of the PCI. His life was a manifesto against all forms of exploitation, dedicated to the defense of workers, young people and the most vulnerable. As an educator, he was able to look beyond ministerial programs, transmitting to generations of students not only technical skills, but above all the values of dignity, intellectual curiosity and a profound civic sense.

At his side, Prof. Filippina Maida embodied the essence of the educational mission in lower secondary school. With tireless dedication and a spirit of sacrifice, he has often chosen to operate in disadvantaged contexts, placing the well-being of his students above all else. Her generosity, silent but concrete, led her to financially support students in difficulty, demonstrating how teaching is, first of all, an act of love and human sensitivity.

The establishment of these scholarships is not just a formal act of remembrance, but a bridge between the past and the future. It is the way in which the school community and the city of Catanzaro choose to revive the example of the Maida teachers, transforming their civil and professional commitment into a concrete opportunity for today’s young talents.
