Streisand: “Cinema has the magical ability to unite us”
«I thought, like a director, about how to tell the story. And I had stories I wanted to tell, like that of Yentl, a 19th-century Jewish woman who had to disguise herself as a man in order to study. But I was a woman and this represented an obstacle for many. And even worse, I was an actress who wanted to direct, so every studio turned me down. And for 15 years the project floundered. But I had to make this film. And it’s this kind of passion that I think all of us here tonight share for cinema. In a crazy and unstable world, which seems to be hit harder and harder every day, it is reassuring to see the films competing at this festival, made by artists from so many countries. Cinema has this magical ability to unite us, to open our hearts and minds. And this is precisely what we celebrate in Cannes. And I’m really proud to be part of this community.” Barbra Streisand, winner of the 2026 Palme d’honneur, says so in the video message sent to the Cannes Film Festival, shown during the closing ceremony.
