After an impressive and complex reconstruction, consolidation and modernization work, today in Catanzaro the Sansinato tunnel on the “Due Mari” state road reopens to traffic.
The structure is the access tunnel to the regional capital city, which has been awaiting reopening for almost two years, sanctioned today by Anas with an official ceremony. The works, worth a total of 14 million, involved the entire structure of the Sansinato tunnel, both the arch and the road surface. Vehicle transit will be officially restored starting from 4pm today.
The highest institutional representatives of the territory were present
The highest institutional representatives of the territory participated in the reopening, starting with the Undersecretary of the Interior Wanda Ferro, who spoke of «a work that will secure all the roads at a crucial point where access from various areas converges. Anas has demonstrated its ability to intervene carefully and today we can finally tell citizens that the inconveniences are over.” The mayor of Catanzaro, Nicola Fiorita, highlighted how «in recent years Catanzaro has been affected by numerous construction sites linked to fundamental public works. A positive sign of a city on the move, even if the works have caused and continue to cause inconvenience in daily life and traffic. Fortunately, many construction sites are reaching completion: several works have already been inaugurated, today the main access to the city is finally fully operational again. Today – claimed Fiorita – the whole city breathes a sigh of relief: entering and exiting Catanzaro will be easier.” According to Filippo Mancuso, vice-president of the Calabria Region, «this is an intervention that is the result of programming shared with the Region and planned for some time. It’s a day of satisfaction for the whole city.”
Mupo (Anas): “It was not a simple superficial intervention”
Luigi Mupo, territorial manager of Anas in Calabria, illustrated the details of the intervention on a technical level: «The works lasted 22 months because it was not a simple superficial intervention: due to significant structural damage, the tunnel was completely rebuilt, with the reconstruction of the structural section and the technological systems, now equipped with advanced monitoring systems, including remote ones. Being a tunnel from the 1950s – concluded Mupo – during the works, unexpected critical issues emerged which required changes to the interventions initially planned”. The reopening ceremony was attended, among others, by the prefect of Catanzaro, Castrese De Rosa, and the president of the Province, Amedeo Mormile.
