Macrì “rekindles” summer time in Tropea: “Neglected city, now zero tolerance for bad nightlife and favouritism”

With the reactivation of the two large municipal clocks in Piazza Vittorio Veneto and Piazza Ercole, both of which have been stopped for months, perhaps for years, I have symbolically restored summer time in the city of Tropea. It may seem like a small thing, but symbols often tell much more than meets the eye. A stopped clock gives the idea of a city that has stopped marking its time; a clock that starts again reminds us that it’s time to get back on the road. – With these words and with this example, Mayor Giovanni Macrì summarized the heart of his new message open to citizens, with the snapshot of a city found unfortunately very different from the one left on 23 April 2024, with the dissolution of the body and with the exhortation to collaboration on the part of everyone, even those who – he says – in this now concluded electoral campaign, were on the other side of the barricade.

Mala movida, Macrì: “The boundary between entertainment and rules has been lost”

No magic wand. I am moving – underlines the mayor – on all fronts: starting from the numerous reports of blackouts this night (Saturday 30 May) which deserve immediate further investigation into the bad nightlife. – Macrì is clear: Tropea must be a lively, cheerful and welcoming city, but it cannot become a city where few disturb the rest and serenity of everyone else. In too many cases the line between fun and respect for the rules has been lost. – Also for this reason – announces the mayor – tomorrow, Monday 1 June, I will meet the provincial Commander of the Carabinieri, the Commander of the Tropea Company, the police commissioner and the prefect

“Provide the commissioners with news to please friends”

But the key point of Macrì’s analysis is all a program: if it is true – he explains – that I am profoundly disappointed by many of the things I found, at the same time I do not accept any attempt to shift all responsibility onto the Extraordinary Commissioners. Those who administer know that decisions are often made on the basis of the information received. And in more than one circumstance – he adds – those who were supposed to inform did not do so adequately or even culpably provided information aimed at satisfying their friends and private interests incompatible with those of the community; a very serious thing – he says – which I am looking into, because no one here is stupid.

“The situation is very complex. Preserve the reputation of Tropea”

The situation – admits the mayor – is unfortunately more complex than it may appear from the outside. There are much deeper issues that the common citizen does not see and can hardly imagine. – From restoring decorum to public order, from cleanliness to the quality of services, we must urgently restore that reputation of Tropea, on which millions of people place their trust; that same reputation built over years of work and which risks being persisted in an instant.

The appeal to everyone: “Report problems to me, we will solve them together”

I am experiencing – he continues – mixed feelings: what I am recording is not the tidy, efficient and well-kept Tropea that I remembered. I feel like the father of a family who returns home after a long absence and finds it neglected, messy and in need of care. Accepting it is not easy. But reality must be looked in the eye, we must take note of it and roll up our sleeves. And once again – he assures – that is exactly what we will do. I feel responsible for the city, not guilty, responsible. And this – he insists – is the difference that exists between those seeking a justification and those seeking a solution. The road is not easy. For this reason – he reiterates – I need your understanding and above all your collaboration. Report problems to me. Help me locate them. Help me solve them. Consider this administration – concludes Macrì – an open house.
