“What you see in this video is unacceptable. In via Seminario Estivo we carry out extraordinary clean-ups at least once a week and, when the situation requires it, even several times within the same week. Yet, sometimes just a few hours are enough for the same places to fill up with waste again. According to what was reconstructed by the municipal police, a resident collected waste from other inhabitants of the area in exchange for small sums of money, and then abandoned it on the public road”. “The camera traps – continues the post – installed in the area of Viale Giostra – Block 13 filmed him numerous times, day and night, while he left bags, furnishings, waste material and much more. The Environmental Team of the Municipal Police, coordinated by Commander Giovanni Giardina, with the operational work of Inspector Cosimo Petitto, reconstructed what was happening, identified the person responsible and forwarded the documents again to the judicial authority. The man had already been reported in the past for similar facts.”
Messinaservizi Bene Comune recalls that “every clean-up requires men and women, means and additional resources, taken away from the ordinary activities planned in the area. The damage falls on the residents, on the citizens who respect the rules, on the work of the operators and on the entire community, which bears the cost of interventions made necessary by illicit behaviour. Via Seminario Estivo is not the only critical area. From the north to the center up to the southern area of the city, we carry out extraordinary clean-ups in the points where abandonments continue to repeat itself. The action of Mayor Federico Basile and the municipal administration goes in a specific direction: to combine land reclamation with the control of the territory and the identification of those responsible, so that the community does not always pay the consequences of illegal behavior. For this reason, cleaning and checks must proceed together.
Messinaservizi Bene Comune finally highlights that “the abandonment of waste is a criminal offense and the current legislation provides for much more severe sanctions than in the past. We cannot accept that respect for the rules by the majority of citizens and the daily work of those who take care of Messina are nullified by those who continue to treat public spaces like landfills”.
