The Prefecture of Reggio Calabria has called, for Tuesday at 12, a new technical coordination meeting for public safety in which the mayor of Gioia Tauro, Simona Scarcella, will also participate. This is what the Municipality of Gioia Tauro makes known, explaining, in a note, that “every initiative announced by the mayor Simona Scarcella for Monday 14 September is suspended, pending the outcome of the meeting”. Following two serious intimidations suffered in the last eight months, the last of which was aimed at his own children, Scarcella had announced that he wanted to chain himself to the Municipality while starting a hunger strike, due to the lack of responses to his appeals from the institutions.

«The municipal administration – we read – welcomes the call, considering it an important institutional opening and a concrete opportunity to address an issue that has profoundly shaken the community. The administration thanks those who, in recent days, have shown solidarity and closeness, helping to keep attention high on a particularly sensitive issue, which concerns not only those who have been directly affected by the intimidating acts, but the entire Gioia community. The hope is that concrete responses and adequate protection measures can emerge from the institutional discussion, capable of restoring serenity to the people involved and security to the city. Gioia Tauro, in these difficult days, has rallied around its mayor and his children. A sign of closeness that the administration intends to enhance with a sense of responsibility, now entrusting the task of identifying the necessary solutions to discussions with the institutions”.
