The rise in fuel prices does not stop. According to the latest data from the Observatory of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, today the average price of petrol in self-service mode on the national road network has risen to 2,100 euros per litre, while diesel has reached 2,208 euros.
Only yesterday the values were respectively 2.086 euros for petrol and 2.193 euros for diesel. In just twenty-four hours, therefore, both fuels recorded a new increase.
Petrol and diesel, how much do they cost on the motorway today
The increases are even more evident on the motorway network. Self-service petrol reaches an average of 2.192 euros per litre, compared to 2.176 euros yesterday, while diesel fuel rises to 2.285 euros per litre, from the previous 2.268 euros.
According to Codacons, the average price of petrol on the motorway would have thus reached the highest level ever recorded in Italy, exceeding the previous peak of 2.184 euros per liter on 14 March 2022.
Codacons: «New record for petrol»
The consumer association speaks of a “new negative record” after that already recorded by diesel and fears further increases if the price of oil remains above 100 dollars a barrel.
Codacons also deems the excise duty cut foreseen only for diesel fuel to be insufficient and asks the Government to extend the discount to petrol too, warning of the possible consequences of the price increases on the purchasing power of families and on consumption.
Fuel prices still rising. According to the Mimit Observatory, today, Saturday 12 September, the average price in self-service mode on the ordinary road network is 2,100 euros per liter for petrol and 2,208 euros for diesel. On the motorway network the self-service average rises to 2.192 euros for petrol and 2.285 euros for diesel.
How much does it cost to fill up today?
With the average self-service prices recorded by Mimit on Saturday 12 September, for a 50-litre tank you need 105 euros for petrol and 110.40 euros for diesel on the ordinary road network. On the motorway the bill rises to 109.60 euros and 114.25 euros respectively.
For a 60 liter tank, on the ordinary network the cost is 126 euros for petrol and 132.48 euros for diesel. On the motorway it costs 131.52 euros for petrol and 137.10 euros for diesel.
The increase compared to yesterday
The comparison with the survey of Friday 11 September shows an increase in all four items. On the ordinary network, petrol went from 2.086 to 2.100 euros per liter and diesel from 2.193 to 2.208. On the motorway, petrol rose from 2.176 to 2.192 euros and diesel from 2.268 to 2.285.
The relief of the Codacons
According to Codacons, the average price of petrol on the motorway would have exceeded the historical Italian record, identified by the consumer association as 2.184 euros per liter on 14 March 2022. The comparison is questionable, because that value is a national weekly average and not a motorway data: according to Figisc calculations, the historical maximum for self-service vehicles remains 2.227 euros per litre, reached on 16 March 2022.
Calculations carried out on the average self-service prices recorded by Mimit on Saturday 12 September 2026: 2,100 euros/litre for petrol and 2,208 euros/litre for diesel on the ordinary network; 2.192 and 2.285 euros/litre on the motorway network.
