A delicate and aware look to narrate one of the most widespread syndromes of our time, and perhaps make it less painful through the story. Anxiety and the relationship with one’s own frailties are at the center of «From my logbook to yours», a medium-length film directed by the director Marlis Andrea De Angelis from the Marche and Gabriele Celona from Messina, also the protagonist and screenwriter. The preview yesterday at the Apollo Multiplex, in the presence of the directors and cast.
Produced by Art One Company with the patronage of the Messina Foundation for Culture, the film puts the spotlight on a psychological state that can block the individual from within, compromising his ability to live fully or carry out the simplest actions.
«The idea for the film was born from the relationship with a discomfort experienced firsthand – Celona reveals – I have always believed that one of the primary ways out was to express all the internal pain. Hence the project to interview, create, delve deeper into the topic and talk about it with those who have actually experienced this condition, weaving a narrative thread that could tell the story of panic attacks and anxiety through a story emblematic of the story of many.”
A fundamental element in this sense is the use of voice-over to enter the protagonist’s mind and his emotional state. «The voice-over is usually an element that can be didactic, but in this case it was a deliberate choice to give voice to the interiority of the character, and deal with anxiety not only from a visual point of view, with the images of continuous panic attacks, but by entering the infernal circle of the specific experience. In the opening scene, for example, where we introduce the theme, or in that of the phone call to the deceased father, to signify the experience of many orphaned boys of an important figure of reference and support, necessary in such a condition”.
Help that in the story will come from the figure of the psychologist (Nicole Pyrathon), from a meeting at the bus stop with an elderly lady (Pina Battiato) and even from the notifications on the cell phone that accompany the character’s life, demonstrating that she is continually present for her friends. An important message of the film is entrusted to the possibility of asking for help, the need to do so.
«In history, the figure of the psychologist represents not only the professional who carries out his job, but a person capable of seeing who is in front of him, accepting his fragility, his history, his years and much more». All elements that bring a glimmer of hope to the story, sending the message that anxiety can block, but does not necessarily have to define who we are.
Among the members of the technical cast is the Messina painter Olga Abate, who created an important mural within the plot for the film; the assistant director Gabriele Alboretti, the Roman director of photography Carlo Alberto Santucci and the Apulian street artist Libero Manzella, author of the Flowrphan project, who created a 26 meter wall placed in Contrada Scoppo. Other shots took place at Cristo Re, with views of Piazza Duomo and the Madonnina del Porto. Also in the artistic cast are Doriana Garufi and Manuel Di Nicola.
