Harsh back and forth on social media between Matteo Renzi and Giorgia Meloni. The topic is the abolition of the tax for cars up to 80 kW decided yesterday by the Council of Ministers. The one who sets the dust alight is the leader of Italia viva who in a post recalls that when he proposed the same measure he had received harsh criticism in return from the current Prime Minister: “He called me a ‘pot salesman’!”. Meloni’s reply came quickly: «Well done Matteo. Tajani: «All the money will be returned to the Regions»
The abolition of the car tax for vehicles up to 80 kW approved yesterday by the Council of Ministers “will be made structural in the maneuver” and “all the money will be returned to the Regions” who “will gain because they will not have the tax evasion and will not have to spend on recovering the tax evasion”. The vice-president of the Council, Antonio Tajani, said this on Radio Anch’io on Radio Rai1.
Salvini: «A starting point», the hypothesis on the super tax
«The tax cut, as far as I’m concerned, is not a point of arrival, but a starting point». This was underlined by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Matteo Salvini, on Rtl 102.5 where he indicates the objective of “making it stable over the years” and increasing the power of the cars involved and excludes having been wrong-footed by the Prime Minister’s proposal. “I’ll leave it up to you to imagine whether the Minister of Transport knows anything about the stamps and super stamps that pass through his offices or not,” he observes.
On the super tax “I am making estimates for the ministry and it accounts for around 250 million euros in income per year”, he continues, it includes cars of a certain power, “of those who use them for work” such as sales agents, taxi drivers and VAT numbers and also the Ferraris of those who can afford it. «My idea is not for everyone immediately, but to start raising the power, the displacement for which the super tax is paid» to «increase a market that will bring the State more money than a 50 million cut would cost», he concludes by saying that it would be a win-win measure.
Giani’s criticisms of reimbursements to the Regions
«We are in the middle of the electoral campaign, demagoguery is reaching exaggerated levels. If Giorgia Meloni wants to take a tax measure consistent with herself, she should do what she has been saying for years: abolish excise duties on fuel. He promised it while he was in opposition, without ever following up on his words.” This was stated by the president of Tuscany Eugenio Giani in an interview with Fatto Quotidiano, criticizing the government’s choice to abolish tax for cars and motorbikes.
According to Giani, the compensation announced by the government would not cover the lower revenue: «Article 3 of the decree talks about a reimbursement to the Regions for 2 billion and 200 million. In a country with 20 Regions it means repaying a maximum of 100 million. For Tuscany, therefore, on the one hand the possibility of obtaining resources for 350 million is removed, on the other 100 million are reimbursed. This is scandalous.”
The president of Tuscany also contests the measure in terms of fiscal autonomy: «Meloni acted with extreme superficiality: an electoral measure is being played in which he cuts taxes, but he does so – coincidentally – not with the taxes of the State, but of the Regions. It had never come this far in 80 years of the Republic. The cornerstones of the reliability of public administrations are being undermined.”
Giani then links the topic to resources for healthcare: «Minister Schillaci also said that the Regions need 5 billion. And in this context the government starts to take away 3 of them, saying that it will then compensate? But what is the reasoning? First it should give us what we need, not take away resources. Not to mention that it is absolutely not correct to transform a tribute into a hypothetical transfer of resources, which does not say where they come from”.
