Today, August 9, 2024, marks the anniversary of the death of Judge Antonino Scopelliti, a man who left an indelible mark on the fight against the mafia in Italy. 33 years after his tragic death, his memory remains alive, not only in the memory of those who knew him, but also in the collective conscience of a country that continues to fight for legality and justice.
A man of law and courage
Born in Campo Calabro, in the province of Reggio Calabria, on January 20, 1935, Antonino Scopelliti was one of the most courageous and determined magistrates of his generation. After a brilliant career in the judiciary, he was called to play a crucial role in the fight against organized crime, dealing with the most delicate and dangerous trials of the time. Scopelliti was appointed as a judge at the Court of Cassation, where he was to support the prosecution in the maxi-trial against Cosa Nostra, the largest criminal proceeding ever conducted against the Sicilian mafia.
The Murder and the Hand of the Mafia
On August 9, 1991, while on vacation in his homeland, Scopelliti was murdered in Piale di Villa San Giovanni, a small town in the province of Reggio Calabria. Fu victim of an attack organized by Cosa Nostra, in collaboration with the Calabrese ‘ndranghetain an attempt to obstruct the course of justice and protect the mafia bosses involved in the maxi-trial. The ambush occurred while the judge was driving his car, struck to death by rifle shots. Scopelliti was 56 years old.
An example for future generations
Antonino Scopelliti’s death was a severe blow to the Italian State, but it did not mark a victory for the Mafia. On the contrary, his figure became a symbol of resistance against organized crime. His sacrifice was not in vain: his memory continues to inspire magistrates, law enforcement officers and ordinary citizens in the daily fight against the Mafia.
