The Scirocco torrent overflows. In the outskirts of Paola there is still an emergency. At every violent downpour the torrent – almost on the border with San Lucido – comes out of the narrow banks carrying mud, water and gravel onto the road that leads to the monastic complex of Badia which for some time has become one of the places of memory thanks to the association “Custodi di bellezza”.
“It’s been thirteen years,” explains a resident, “that every time the rain gets more insistent, the Scirocco torrent located in via della Badia punctually overflows. And no one takes action. Only small adjustments are made. It’s a constant inconvenience for the residents.” The concern is when the rainy season will arrive. Also on site were the minority group leader Andrea Signorelli and the Rbc activist Francesco Eboli. “It’s still August and, after two months of drought, the rain has finally arrived. But other problems have also arrived, linked to the neglect of the waterways and, above all, the lack of interventions on those critical and fragile points of our territory.”
This is the case of the Badia area. “The residents remember well the promises – Signorelli and Eboli say – repeated at every election campaign, which ensured the resolution of the flood problem. The solution was then identified but remained a mere election promise. The construction of a small bridge under which to let the sudden waters flow and over which to let the inhabitants of that area pass safely, who today are isolated and also feel abandoned by the institutions. It is useless to send the bulldozer to clear the road of debris; the next rains will bring the bill again and the small road will become increasingly smaller due to its crumbling”.
