The linear sequence of Calabrian production system is consolidated within periodic surveys. Reports that become the common thread that pushes towards a paradigm shift in the South of the South of Italy. A trend that also emerges from the analysis carried out by Tagliacarne Study Center and Unioncamere on the local systems of 2023 which takes into account the latest Istat review from last September. According to the survey, the added value (which is the aggregate that allows us to appreciate the growth of the economic system in terms of new goods and services made available to the community for final uses) grows in all the provinces of Italy but those of the Southern Italy appears to be more dynamic in terms of the rates of increases recorded. A miracle that has not occurred for at least twenty years according to the Istituto Tagliacarne and Unioncamere. In absolute values, however, Milan with 62,863 euros per head confirms itself, for the 22nd consecutive year, as the first Italian province in terms of wealth produced per capita in 2023, closely followed by Bolzano (52,811 euros) and Bologna (43,510 euros ). On the opposite side, despite the appreciable acceleration of pace, Agrigento with 17,345 euros each remains relegated to last place in the ranking, as already happened in 2022, while Cosenza is second to last with 17,362.07 euros.

The scenario

The president of Unioncamere, Andrea Prete, observes «a South with important signs of vitality even if in front of provinces which record trends even higher than the national average there are others which struggle to keep pace, thus emerging almost a North and a South interior of the South itself. For this reason, it is essential to develop development policies that allow for a more extensive and balanced progression of the different territories. In this direction, the Chambers of Commerce can be an important transmission belt between the State and local economies.”

The primacy

There is a South that is growing more than anyone else in the added value produced by industry and public administration. The industry confirms itself as the driving force of the local systems in the South which advances, in fact, by 5.46% between 2022 and 2023, doing better than the North East (+ 4.66%), North West (+ 4.13%) and Center (+3.85%). It is no coincidence that 8 of the top ten provinces that achieve the best performances in the sector are from the South and, of these, five are Sicilian. While the provinces of the South rise to 9, which stand out in the top ten of the ranking for the increases in added value recorded by the Public Administration and other services sector, a sector historically very present in the South. The best performers are Catanzaro (+6.02%), Vibo Valentia (+5.19%), Reggio Calabria (+4.96%). Overall, the added value of the South in the sector recorded an increase of 3.24%, followed with a certain gap by the North West (+2.59%), Center (2.29%) and North East (+2. 20%).
