Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori become the third Italian couple in history to play a Slam final after Nicola Pietrangeli and Orlando Sirola and the one composed of Simone Bolelli himself and Fabio Fognini. In the semifinals at the Australian Open the Azzurri defeated the Germans Yannick Hanfmann-Dominik Koepfer 6-3 3-6 7-6(5). Bolelli and Vavassori completed the match with 49 winners to 36 and one free down, 19 to 18. In the final they will play against the Indian Rohan Bopanna and the Australian Matthew Ebden. Seeded number 2, in the semi-final they defeated the Czech Thomas Machac and the Chinese Zhizhen Zhang 6-3 3-6 7-6(7), winning the fifth tie-break out of five played in the tournament in the decisive set. However the final goes, the Indian will have something to celebrate: on Monday Bopanna will in fact become, at 43, the oldest world number 1 in doubles since the computerized ranking existed. Two Italian successes in doubles in the Slams: the 1959 Roland Garros won by Pietrangeli and Sirola and the 2015 Australian Open won by Bolelli and Fognini.
