New damage caused by bad weather has hit the capital of Messina. Due to the landslide of a hill in the town of Ritiro along the municipal road leading to San Michele, yesterday, two families were evacuated by the firefighters and the Civil Protection while the area, which had become a red zone, was cordoned off and closed to traffic by the municipal police.

A bakery and the house next door were evacuated

A two-story house suffered serious damage. Due to the risk of collapse of the structure which in the past housed a bakery, the occupants, two people, who live on the upper floor, were immediately removed. For safety reasons, the owners of the house next door were also evacuated. The situation is monitored by the municipal civil protection due to the persistence of the rain and the risk of new collapses.

«Yesterday morning – says the owner of one of the two houses affected by the landslide – we realized what was happening and we immediately called the firefighters. We are in the land that was expropriated when the Giostra junction was built but without the necessary canalization works for the water that flows into the land below. The president of the 5th District, Raffaele Verso, is on site and will convene a commission. «The bad weather – he says – continues to remind us that we are a fragile territory. We need serious checks and preventive works, we cannot always pray that everything goes well. Fortunately in this case too there was no damage to people but there are still two families who don’t know how long they will have to stay out of their homes.”
