The 103rd edition of the Tre Valli Varesine was canceled when riders, including Tadej Pogacar, got off their bikes after more than an hour of riding in the cold and pouring rain.
The reason for the suspension and therefore the cancellation of the race, which occurred approximately 58 kilometers after the start, is linked to safety reasons. In addition to the heavy rain and strong wind with poor visibility, especially in the Schiranna area, cyclists were worried about the water leaking from the manholes and flooding the road with a high risk of falls. During his explanation to the race direction and the organizers, Pogacar recalled the death during the race of the promising Swiss cycling player, Muriel Furrer during the junior trial of the World Championships in Zurich. Initially the ‘Tre Valli Varesine 2024’ was shortened from 200.3 kilometers to 168.3.
