The Democratic Party of Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto will not enter the future council led by the newly elected mayor Melangela Scolaro. This was clarified by managers, city councilors and Dem candidates, who took a position after the proposal addressed to the party to participate in the upcoming administration with government roles.

In the document, the signatories recall how the Democratic Party faced the recent electoral competition with the candidacy for mayor of David Bongiovanni, in coalition with Città Aperta – Controcorrente and Movimento 5 Stelle, bringing forward an “alternative” political proposal compared to the one that won at the polls.

«Unbridgeable political distances»

Democratic representatives underline that the assessments expressed during the electoral campaign “remain today, just over a week after the vote, identical” and represent elements “inhibiting any form of direct and organic involvement of the Party in the city administration”.

The statement also reiterates the doubts about the composition of the winning coalition, highlighting “its heterogeneity” and “the unbridgeable distance from movements that question citizens’ fundamental rights”.

«A different model of city government»

According to the signatories, the Democratic Party “tends towards a different model of city government, based on coherence and project sharing between the components of the coalition” and continues to fight “at all territorial levels, to protect minorities and the fundamental rights of citizens”.

«Strict but responsible opposition»

While confirming the choice to remain outside the Council, the Dem representatives recall the difficulties affecting Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, described as a city “deprived of essential services, in a state of financial distress, with municipal taxes and tariffs at the highest levels for years, without adequate forms of support for the weakest sections of the citizenry”.

For this reason, the signatories confirm “the commitment to carry out a rigorous but responsible opposition”, ensuring “the availability to support and share all the proposals deemed useful for the city”.
