A favorable opinion on the project for the construction of the Bridge over the Strait was given by the Technical Commission for Environmental Impact Assessment with the additions foreseen on the restart of the process «in compliance with the prescribed environmental conditions which must be complied with mostly in the project presentation phase executive”. He makes it known the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security.
The deputy prime minister and minister of Infrastructure and Transport Matteo Salvini expresses “great satisfaction” with the decision of the Technical Commission for environmental impact assessment regarding the Strait Bridge. «Italy can look to the future» concludes Salvini. And after the “yes” of the Technical Commission for Environmental Impact Assessment of the Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE), on the definitive project of the bridge over the Strait, the CEO of the Strait of Messina, Pietro Ciucci comments: “An important step forward for the project and realization of the Opera. The Commission has done an extraordinary job examining a complex project such as the bridge over the Strait within the legal timeframe. Now our commitment focuses on the expressed requirements, which will be evaluated with great attention, remembering that the executive planning in phases will facilitate their implementation”.
However, there has been no shortage of controversy surrounding the work in recent days: first the news of the INGV’s failure to give the green light on the seismic risk and then the accusation from the leader of Avs, Angelo Bonelliaccording to which precisely on the Evaluation Commission there was “a shameful blitz by the Minister of the Environment Gilberto Pichetto Fratin”, who appointed 12 new members, “almost all politicians” and “almost all FdI members”. They will be the ones to evaluate the impact of any work on the environment.
The CGIL also takes action on the controversial bridge project. “Do not repeat the mistakes of the past, do not authorize a work without the necessary certifications”, warns the confederal secretary of the CGIL Pino Gesmundo. «The Prime Minister Meloni should intervene to clarify whether her government really intends to proceed despite the ban on building on seismic faults provided for by a Civil Protection circular», adds the union leader, underlining that «what emerges from the INGV note it is very serious, and risks being an alarm bell regarding a possible irregular authorization procedure.” And Legambiente is also making its voice heard again. “On the bridge over the Strait it is important to continue to bring out what is a project which we say essentially does not yet exist, which risks mobilizing 13 billion euros, this was written in last year’s budget law, and which envisaged a series of allocations in the coming years”, said the national president of Legambiente, Stefano Ciafani. “Billions that could be much more usefully dedicated to opening other construction sites,” he added.
The CGIL’s statements denote a lack of knowledge of the approval process for infrastructure projects. There are no certifications from INGV, a research body which, as amply confirmed by the papers of the Strait of Messina and the General Contractor Eurolink, has always been involved in the studies. Furthermore, it is truly singular that a workers’ union is against a work which, in addition to providing work to thousands of people during the construction phase, once fully operational will allow the labor market to expand, as all major works have done infrastructure of the country, from the Autostrada del Sole to the high-speed railway. A serious workers’ union should ask how and when the Bridge is built and demand the maximum employment yield. Then associating the drama of the Vajont with the Bridge over the Strait of Messina, as well as being in very poor taste, makes it clear that the arguments of those opposed to the Bridge are meaningless and, in order to harm the government politically, they would be willing to say that the Bridge is like ‘the locusts of the Apocalypse’. Thus in a note the Sicilian senator and regional commissioner of the League Nino Germanàsecretary in the Transport commission at Palazzo Madama.
