More rail and bus connections during summer 2026, especially in coastal areas with a greater tourist vocation. It is one of the main decisions taken by the Calabria Region Council in today’s session.

On the proposal of the Councilor for Agriculture Gianluca Gallo, the act of direction for the strengthening of local public transport services, rail and road, in the summer period and on the occasion of particularly important events was approved.

More trains and buses on summer weekends in Calabria

The measure provides for the intensification of connections and the increase in frequencies on the weekends of July and August 2026. The objective is to promote sustainable mobility, improve accessibility to the main regional destinations and facilitate the movement of residents outside the region for study or work reasons.

Extraordinary services for tourist, cultural and religious events

The act also provides for the activation of extraordinary services on the occasion of tourist, cultural and religious events that attract a large number of participants.

The strengthening of regional public road transport is also envisaged through additional services and more frequent connections between the main railway and airport hubs and the most attractive tourist destinations in Calabria, from the sea to the mountains, from spa resorts to cities of art.

The intervention aims to support the tourist offer and reduce the effects of congestion in the areas most affected by seasonal flows.

Green light for the Farneto del Principe Dam Emergency Plan

During the same session, on the proposal of President Roberto Occhiuto, the Council approved the Farneto del Principe Dam Emergency Plan, drawn up on the basis of the directive of the President of the Council of Ministers of 8 July 2014.

The drafting of the civil protection document of the Farneto del Principe dam was carried out by the Cosenza dams technical office and approved by the Prefecture of Cosenza.

The Plan takes into account both the hydraulic risk induced by the dam and the risk resulting from the activation of the drains and reports the scenarios regarding the areas potentially affected by the flood wave, the operational strategies to deal with an emergency situation and the intervention model linked to the alert phases.

Initiatives for the 70th anniversary of the death of Corrado Alvaro

Again on the indication of President Occhiuto, it was decided to promote initiatives for the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the death of Corrado Alvaro, an anniversary of high cultural and identity interest for the Calabria Region.

Agriculture, Agea-Calabria Region protocol and new Arcea commissioner

For the simplification and improvement of the efficiency of the procedures connected to the management of agricultural and regional rural development interventions, the draft memorandum of understanding between the Agency for agricultural disbursements (Agea) and the Calabria Region was approved.

Furthermore, the regional manager Giuseppe Arcidiacono was appointed extraordinary commissioner of the Calabria Region Agency for agricultural provision (Arcea).

Disability, regional guidelines approved

On the proposal of the Welfare Councilor Pasqualina Straface, the guidelines for the implementation of Legislative Decree number 62 of 3 May 2024 concerning the definition of the condition of disability, the basic assessment, reasonable accommodation and the individual, personalized and participatory life project were approved.

The guidelines will provide the social territorial areas, the provincial health authorities and all the subjects involved with a uniform methodological and operational framework across the entire regional territory.

Protection of the sea, agreement between the Calabria Region and the Coast Guard

The Council, on the recommendation of the Environment Councilor Antonio Montuoro, also approved the draft Memorandum of Understanding between the Calabria Region and the General Command of the Port Authority Corps – Coast Guard.

The provision arises from the awareness of the strategic value that the sea and coastal areas have for Calabria, a region that has over 800 kilometers of coastline overlooking the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas and 116 coastal municipalities.

The sea and the coastal landscape represent elements of Calabria’s identity and one of the main factors of attractiveness of the area. Their protection is indicated as an essential condition for supporting the sustainable development of the region and strengthening its tourism competitiveness.
