Yet another scam risked taking place to the detriment of a citizen of Messina, who decided to tell it to the Gazzetta del Sud. He received a phone call on his mobile phone and a number of the police appeared on the display, specifically of the barracks in via Monsignor D’Arrigo. On the other side there was an unknown person, who qualified himself as a soldier of the Carabinieri, reporting that the identity card of the person called had been cloned and used to purchase a white Fiat Panda, subsequently used to carry out a robbery. “They treated me like a suspect, putting pressure on me and asking for maximum collaboration,” the complainant remarked.
And here is the key moment of the scam: «Despite having offered to go to the barracks», the fake soldier «insisted on coming to my house», with the excuse of «doing an “appraisal of the jewels”». But the attempt to bait the unfortunate man fortunately failed.
«The number on the display can be falsified: it’s called spoofing – he adds -. Even if you read “carabinieri” or a verified number on Google, it may not be attributable to the police station. If you have any doubts, hang up. Call 112 or the barracks number. I physically went there and the military confirmed to me that it is a scam that exploits the cloning of their telephone number.”
