«The administrative elections are the elections of the Municipalities and the Regions, the political ones are the elections of the national Parliament. Mixing them is useless.” Pier Ferdinando Casini said this in Catanzaro, during the presentation of the book “Al centro dell’aula” as part of the “Books & Bubbles” exhibition.
The former president of the Chamber addressed various political topics, focusing in particular on the role of foreign policy and the need for a clear line on the part of the opposition.
“Foreign policy cannot be propaganda”
«Electoral propaganda can be done on many things, not on foreign policy. It is too important,” said Casini, arguing that the opposition must present itself to voters with a common and coherent platform.
Speaking about the conflict in Ukraine, the former president of the Chamber added: «We cannot proceed in no particular order on Ukraine. In these hours there are continuous bombings on Kiev: if anyone thinks that it doesn’t concern us, I’ll be terrified.”
Casini then reiterated his pro-European vision: «I define myself as a European sovereignist. National sovereignty makes no sense. If we want not to be subjects we must take our destiny into our own hands.”
Doubts about differentiated autonomy
During the meeting, differentiated autonomy was also discussed. «If done well it can be a positive element. If, however, it creates disparities to the detriment of the South, it is something that should absolutely be rejected,” he declared.
According to Casini, the South represents a great opportunity for the country: «It is a fantastic territory and can be an element of enormous enrichment for Italy».
