New attack on prison police personnel. During the control operations envisaged by the penitentiary system, preliminary to the translation of a prisoner to the Court for a hearing, a prisoner, already accused of assault against officers on duty in various institutions in the country and burdened by significant criminal records, at the invitation to undergo handcuffing procedures attacked a policeman of the escort, hitting him in the knee and forcing him to seek treatment in the city emergency room.

Not satisfied with the first violent gesture, the inmate subsequently also attempted to attack the chief escort inspector; only thanks to the promptness and professionalism of the staff present was it possible to avoid worse consequences, then proceed with the handcuffing and guarantee the regular translation to the hearing.

Il Sappe: “The serious staff shortage is no longer tolerable”

The local secretariat of SAPPE expresses solidarity with the officers involved, announcing that the same prisoner, already a few weeks ago, had attempted to attack and threaten other staff. The union also notes that the serious shortage of staff at the Castrovillari department is no longer tolerable, reported several times both to the DAP (Department of Penitentiary Administration) and to the Regional Directorate of the Penitentiary Administration of Calabria, aggravated by the removal of the department commander for four days a week in order to make up for the lack of the commander of the Rossano prison”. The Administration is therefore asked to take immediate and decisive action aimed at «re-establishing adequate safety conditions and guaranteeing the full operation of the institute, as well as the timely conclusion of the work on the rooms intended for video conferences, tools which are now indispensable for reducing the risks associated with the translations of prisoners». At the same time, an appeal is made to politicians to “intervene with clear rules with no room for interpretation, providing, for prisoners considered dangerous, the obligation – without alternatives – to attend the hearings via videoconference directly from their detention institutions, to protect the safety of Penitentiary Police personnel and collective security”.
