This morning, an inmate attacked an assistant chief on duty in the Castrovillari prison, causing him serious injuries. The episode would have occurred for trivial reasons. The attacker is a person already known for his dangerousness, transferred in September 2025 from the Potenza prison to the Calabrian one following repeated attacks against staff.
The conditions of the agent
According to what Sappe reported, the prison officer suffered trauma to his right cheekbone and a hematoma to his eye, with a prognosis of 30 days. «Despite the precedents – says Gaetano Maurmo, deputy regional secretary of Sappe in a note – nothing has been done to prevent yet another episode of violence».
Sappe’s complaint
«The numbers and reports tell a dramatic reality: state servants left alone, forced to work in conditions of constant risk, without adequate protection and with staff reduced to the bare minimum», declare Giovanni Battista Durante, deputy general secretary of Sappe, and Francesco Ciccone, national secretary.
The union representatives speak of a “two-speed administration, with big projects at the center and prisons abandoned to themselves”, asking for concrete interventions and adequate protection for prison police personnel, who are said to be victims of around 2,000 attacks a year.
Solidarity and request for interventions
Sappe expressed full solidarity with the attacked officer, wishing him a speedy recovery, but underlining that “solidarity alone is no longer enough”. «It is unacceptable – they conclude – that violence within penitentiary institutions continues to be treated as an ordinary fact».
