Extra virgin olive oil, the “green gold”, went through two years of record price increases in Calabria, marking a season in which the price per liter put families and consumers in difficulty. Today, however, the condiment symbol of the region returns to the supermarket shelves at lower prices, giving relief to pockets but opening up disturbing questions about the production chain. According to the most recent data from Mimit, in Cosenza a liter costs on average 6.24 euros, in Reggio 5.79 and in Catanzaro 5.93, with drops between 3.30 and 3.68 euros compared to last year. A relief for buyers, a wake-up call for producers: the drop in prices is not justified by either quantity or quality, both of which are still excellent.
