«In this last period the Calabrian economy, like the national one, is going through a particularly complex phase. Over the last year, the winds of war coming from the Middle East have led to a significant increase in fixed costs for tertiary companies, estimated on average at around 14%, with peaks reaching 22% in highly energy-intensive sectors, such as catering. And the scenarios that emerge do not appear reassuring: if these conditions of instability were to persist, the estimates could even double.” Thus the president of Confcommercio Calabria Klaus Algieri comments to ANSA on the repercussions of the war on the Calabrian economy.

Inflation and decline in sales volumes in trade: an estimated decline of 2.1% year-on-year

«International instability and high fuel prices – he adds – impact our region more markedly than other territories, also due to the persistent logistics gap. In fact, freight transport alone registers an increase of 11% on regional price lists. All this translates into an inflationary dynamic that erodes the purchasing power of families, resulting in a real decline in sales volumes in retail trade estimated at around -2.1% on an annual basis. The real risk is that of triggering a recessionary spiral: companies are compressing their margins by up to 30% so as not to fully pass on the higher costs to consumers. However, this resilience has now reached its limit.” “For this reason – concludes Algieri – we ask the institutions for structural interventions: one-off measures are not sufficient, but a stable reduction in the tax burden is necessary, capable of offsetting the surge in management costs caused by the current international scenario”.
