Cyclone Harry, Cna Calabria: “Now the litmus test on catastrophe policies”

“The introduction of compulsory insurance against catastrophe events for businesses is today subjected to its first real field test. It is the moment of truth: we will understand whether this instrument will represent real protection or whether it will risk translating, in practice, into an additional tax, devoid of effective protection”. This was stated by the president of CNA Calabria Giovanni Cugliari, expressing full solidarity with the damaged companies, entrepreneurs and artisans who are dealing with extensive damage to structures, machinery and stocks.

The critical issues of the system: coverage and deductibles

“The priority today is to allow production activities to be safe and restart – he continues – but what has happened also requires a reflection that can no longer be postponed. Already in the discussion phases of the insurance obligation we had highlighted obvious critical issues: company assets that are difficult to insure, partial coverage, insufficient limits, high deductibles, exclusion clauses that could leave many companies formally insured but essentially uncovered in times of need”.

CNA monitoring against the risk of “protections on paper”

For the Confederation of artisan businesses, concrete risk is an obligation respected on paper, but incapable of carrying out the function for which it was introduced. This is why, states Cugliari, “we will immediately activate timely monitoring of concrete cases, collecting reports from affected businesses and verifying the effective response of the policies to the damage suffered. This is not an ideological battle, but a question of economic fairness and credibility of the system. Businesses cannot be left alone either before or after disasters, much less burdened by obligations that do not produce real protection”.

The appeal to the institutions: save the tourist season

“On this ground, the ability of the institutions to stand on the side of those who produce work and value, even in difficult contexts, will be measured”, states the president who asks for immediate interventions from the institutions to allow companies to recover what has been lost and to be able to resume their activities. “Many, too many, tourist areas are affected. With just a few months left until the start of the summer season, we cannot leave businesses alone. They must be supported and supported.”
