Race against time to avoid the disengagement of European structural funds. The deadline is set for December 31st: by that date the Region will have to spend and report approximately 700 million euros by the end of the year, so as not to risk losing resources.
However, an analysis of the data published on the European Commission’s Cohesion Data portal, which covers the trend in allocations until 30 June 2023, leaves more than a glimmer of optimism open. If on the one hand, in fact, Calabria remains in the last places in the Italian territorial ranking for the expenditure of the structural funds of the EU cohesion policy, on the other hand Brussels notes a notable progress in the 6 months. At the end of the first half of the current year, the expenditure certified by the Citadel and reimbursed in Brussels amounted to approximately 1.5 billion euros out of 2.2 billion, i.e. 70 percent. Compared to December 2022, Calabria increased the pace of spending, gaining twelve percentage points in 6 months.
