Sonia Alfano will be a candidate with Action in the elections to be held next June, for the renewal of the European Parliament. Member of the European Parliament for Italy of Values from 2009 to 2014, Sonia Alfano, daughter of the journalist murdered by the Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto (Messina) mafia on 8 January 1993developed the «consolidated law against mafias, corruption and money laundering», approved by the Commission on Organized Crime of the European Parliament, with the aim of targeting organized crime in Europe with effective tools, based on the Italian legislative experience .

«The candidacy – we read in a note – received the unanimous consent of the party Carlo Calenda and was presented yesterday, in Rome, at the Azione headquarters by the president Mara Carfagna. «We were happy to welcome Sonia's membership to Azione a few months ago – says Carfagna – because we are certain that she will be able to carry forward Sturzo's founding values of social liberalism and popularism. For Sonia, her history speaks, not only in Strasbourg, where she held the position of president of the anti-mafia and anti-money laundering commissions, her civil commitment against all mafias and his tireless battle to make the fight against organized crime a priority at European level too.”

“I am grateful to Action and it is a privilege for me to be able to support its programmatic lines: the establishment of a federal Europe, school, work, health and safety – says Sonia Alfano – I wish to continue my battles within the halls of the European Parliament and among these the reconstitution of that important Commission, which had no follow-up once my mandate expired after 2014. But above all – she concludes – I feel honored to be able to carry forward the requests of all the people in Italy who firmly believe in fight against mafias, corruption and injustice”.
