A fire devastated a karaoke bar in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, killing 11 people and injuring two others. The police suspect a malicious act and have arrested a man. Images in state media showed the multi-storey building, located in western Hanoi, blackened and almost completely destroyed by flames, and piles of twisted metal sheets strewn nearby. Police said they received reports of a fire and “many people trapped inside” at 11pm (5pm in Italy). Rescuers managed to extract seven people alive, two of whom were rushed to hospital. Eleven others were found dead. State media said surveillance camera footage showed a man entering the premises with a bucket, possibly containing petrol, shortly before the fire broke out. Two years ago, near Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), a fire in a karaoke bar killed 32 people, leading to the closure of thousands of venues of this type throughout Vietnam due to failure to comply with fire regulations. More than two-thirds of the country’s approximately 15,000 karaoke bars have been forced to close.
