GENOA | Gilardino beats Inzaghi and Genoa climbs up the table. The challenge between the two world champion attackers in 2006 who are now coaches in Serie A goes to the rossoblù coach who after two consecutive defeats finds victory and three points. For Inzaghi, recently on the Campania bench, a heavy defeat for the standings and morale at the end of a match with many shadows and very little light for the Granata. Gilardino finds Retegui again after almost a month and the Italian-Argentine immediately starts against a Salernitana team that Inzaghi fields with Dia as an offensive terminal supported by Candreva and Cabral. Genoa aggressive from the start and capable of winning three consecutive corners in the first three minutes. Corners that only the skill of Ochoa, on a header from Dragusin and the post, on Badelj also with a header, were not converted by the hosts who were ahead.

However, the pressure from the rossoblù is continuous and Inzaghi’s men struggle to overcome the midline of the pitch. In the 16th minute Retegui receives the ball on the edge and unleashes a sudden shot that Ochioa manages to deflect onto the post with his fingertips. In the 34th minute Salernitana managed to ease Genoa’s pressure by finishing with Dia whose diagonal low shot fell to Martinez. A minute later Genoa took the lead. Gudmundsson receives at the limit from Malinovskyi, gets rid of the marker and beats Ochoa with a perfect diagonal that goes into the far corner. Genoa’s advantage was not matched by a reaction from Salernitana who continued to suffer against the rossoblù, still risking a shot from Sabelli deflected for a corner again by Ochoa. Inzaghi thus tries to change in the second half by immediately introducing Sambia and Bohinen while Gilardino loses Retegui who is still not at his best. But the second half was far from the spectacle of the first half and the match became a chess match marked above all by substitutions. Genoa controls and without Retegui they struggle to find the opponent’s goal, Salernitana raises their center of gravity but when they hit they are often offside as with a crossbar hit by Mazzocchi and a conclusion that went just wide by di Dia. The 5 minutes of injury time were not enough for the guests to build a real move to try to equalize and so in the end Gilardino’s boys could celebrate.
