The men’s biathlon race over the 20 km distance at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics provided strong emotions on and off the track. The Norwegian Sturla Holm Lægreid, bronze medal in the individual event, surprised everyone at the end of the race with a personal confession on live television which quickly achieved widespread media coverage.

The dramatic confession

Interviewed by the Norwegian broadcaster NRK, Lægreid emotionally shared an episode from his private life, revealing that he had recently admitted to his girlfriend that he had cheated on her. The 28-year-old called this experience “the worst week of my life” and expressed deep regret for having hurt the person he called “the love of my life”, admitting that the pain of this affair also overshadowed the satisfaction for the medal he won.

In the story made public, Lægreid said he still wanted the chance to share that special moment with his partner and was aware of having made a “huge mistake”. The confession transformed a sports interview into a moment of strong emotional impact, highlighting how the human dimension can be intertwined with the spectacle of Olympic competitions.

On a competitive level, the race was won by his compatriot Johan-Olav Botn, ahead of the Frenchman Éric Perrot, while Lægreid finished in third place, winning his first individual medal in an Olympic event.
