The video of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir celebrating the first yes in the Knesset to the law for the death penalty for terrorists by offering sweets caused a sensation. The jubilant leader of the messianic far right is filmed wandering the corridors of Parliament with a tray of sweets, offering them and loudly claiming the result of the chamber. “Jewish Power (Otzma Yehudit, of which Ben-Gvir is the leader) is on its way to making history,” the minister wrote on X, posting the video.

Last night the controversial bill promoted by fellow parliamentarian, Limor Son Har-Melechda, passed the first reading with 39 votes in favor and 16 against. The legislative bill provides for the death penalty for those who kill Israelis for reasons of “racism” and “with the aim of damaging the State of Israel and the rebirth of the Jewish people in their land”.
Opponents have pointed out that, thus worded, it would apply only to Arabs who kill Jews and not to Jewish terrorists. In Israel the death penalty is formally in force but it has only been applied once, in 1962, in the case of Adolf Eichmann, one of the ‘architects’ of the Holocaust.
Hamas: ‘death penalty law is criminal and racist’
Hamas considers the first reading approval by the Knesset, the Israeli parliament, of the law for the death penalty for terrorists “an extension of the racist and criminal approach of the Zionist government and an attempt to legitimize the organized mass killing of Palestinians”. This was stated by the Islamic faction in a statement broadcast by the Qatari TV channel Al Araby. The movement calls on the international community, the United Nations and human rights organizations to “condemn this dangerous legislation, impose deterrent sanctions on the rogue Zionist entity and press for its withdrawal.”
