“Journey into the beauty” of the Riace Bronzes: Rai Storia’s tribute 50 years after the discovery

The Riace Bronzes, the two magnificent Greek statues from the 5th century BC, are the subject of an appointment, directed by Brigida Gullo and directed by Federico Cataldi, with ‘Italia. Viaggio nella bellezza’, broadcast on Monday 12 August at 9.40 pm and repeated on the anniversary of their discovery, Friday 16 August at 3.30 pm on Rai Storia.

From their fortuitous discovery in the waters of Calabria to their first restoration in Florence which lasted five years, to their debut at the Archaeological Museum, on 15 December 1980, then at the Quirinale in 1981. Their final destination, in the summer of 1981, was the then National Museum of Reggio Calabria, today the Archaeological Museum, which continues to preserve and enhance them.

Speakers include Vinzenz Brinkmann (Liebieghaus Skulpturensammlung – Frankfurt am Main), Pietro Giovanni Guzzo (Accademia dei Lincei), Mario Iozzo (Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Florence, 2015-2023), Carmelo Malacrino (Director of the National Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria 2015-2023), Marcello Miccio (chemical restorer), Mario Micheli (University of Roma Tre), Maurizio Paoletti (University of Calabria), Giuseppe Zurzolo (mayor of Riace 1970-1980).
