The Court of Appeal of Reggio Calabria issued the sentence in the ordinary part of the “Ionic Mandate” trial, after the annulment with postponement ordered by the Supreme Court. Michele Carbone, Antonio Ietto (born 1953), Giuseppe Ietto and Giuseppe Sergi were fully acquitted of the charge of mafia association.
Antonio Ietto (1953), assisted by the lawyers Carmelo Zinnarello and Cesare Placanica, obtained a full acquittal, as did Michele Carbone, defended by the lawyers Antonio Alvaro and Giuseppe Belcastro, who saw the arguments already accepted by the Supreme Court recognized.
The Court has redesigned the sanctioning framework for other defendants. Giuseppe Ietto, defended by the lawyers Sergio Laganà and Giuseppe Zampaglione, and Giuseppe Sergi, defended by the lawyers Carlo Morace, Emanuele Procopio and Marco Scudo, were sentenced to 8 months in prison for one hypothesis of auction rigging. The defense argued that a single episode cannot constitute any direct or external contribution to the mafia association. Leonardo Policheni, defended by the lawyer Eugenio Minniti, obtained a reduction of his sentence to 9 years of imprisonment.
The judges of Piazza Castello accepted the proposal for an agreement on appeal for Sebastiano Giorgi, assisted by the lawyers Gianfranco Giunta and Francesco Fortuna, who saw the sentence redetermined at 12 years and 3 months. Punishment also agreed for Domenico Pelle, defended by lawyers Luca Cianferoni and Antonio Giampaolo, who was sentenced to 7 years and 6 months, with recognition of the continuation of the associative conduct already ascertained in the “Reale” trial. Finally Arcangelo Mollica was sentenced to 9 years in prison, with the exclusion of the alleged recidivism.
