The Metropolitan City of Messina launches a vast program of interventions for the extraordinary maintenance and safety of the provincial road network. The plan, with a total value of 7,225,636.22 euros, includes five tenders that will be announced in the coming weeks, with the aim of restoring the functionality of the road arteries, reducing the hydrogeological risk and improving traffic in the Tyrrhenian, Aeolian and Nebroid territories.
The technical offices, directed by Biagio Privitera, completed all the procedures necessary for the start of the tenders despite the lack of personnel, ensuring compliance with the deadlines and the adequacy of the design solutions. The initiative is part of the strategic objectives of the Basile administration, which aims to redevelop infrastructure as a lever for the economic and social development of the metropolitan area.
The opening of the tenders marks the transition from the planning phase to the executive phase, responding to the safety, mobility and environmental protection needs of citizens.
The details of the races
October 20th – Maintenance of the roads in the Tyrrhenian area
The first tender, financed by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport with 937,600 euros, concerns eleven provincial roads (SP 60, 60 bis, 60 ter, 61, 61 quater, 62, 63, 64, 65/a, 66 and 66/a) which connect the municipalities of Monforte San Giorgio, Torregrotta, Condrò, Sicaminò, San Pier Niceto and San Filippo del Mela. Work is planned on retaining walls, ditches for water flow, lateral protective barriers, resurfacing of the road surface and new signage.
November 4 – Redevelopment of roads in the Aeolian Islands
The second tender, worth 259,000 euros, concerns three arteries in the municipality of Lipari: the SP 178 (Vulcano), the SP 179 (Pianoconte) and the SP 181/B (Quattropani–Acquacalda).
The works, in full compliance with the landscape constraints of the Aeolian Archipelago, include the arrangement of the road surface, the repair of the parapets and the renewal of the horizontal and vertical signs.
November 5 – Recovery of the Nebrodi road network
With funding of 1,037,600 euros from the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, the third tender concerns 14 provincial roads between Capo d’Orlando and Santo Stefano di Camastra.
The interventions will include the reconstruction of ditches and retaining walls, the restoration of manholes and parapets, the stabilization of the roadways and the laying of new asphalt.
November 6 – Maintenance of the SP 57 of Barrera in Rometta
The fourth intervention, worth 792,536.22 euros, aims to restore the SP 57, which has long been affected by subsidence and landslides. Work is planned to consolidate the road body, rainwater management, resurfacing and updating of signage, to re-establish full functionality of the connection between the hilly areas and the coast.
November 7 – Consolidation of the SP 181 of Pignataro in Lipari
Last scheduled intervention, worth 398,900 euros, financed under the Framework Program Agreement II Supplementary Act of the Sicilian Region.
The project involves the consolidation of the tunnel and the protection of the coastal stretch of Bagnamare, with works on parapets, rock walls, retaining walls and roadbed, to mitigate risks from storm surges and landslides and guarantee the continuity of connections.
A technical and sustainable approach
All interventions were designed with attention to environmental sustainability and respect for the landscape. The works will be carried out on existing routes, avoiding extensive changes to the territory and reducing the impact on biodiversity. Particular attention was paid to the regulation of the water and the consolidation of the slopes, to prevent erosion phenomena and guarantee greater stability of the road surface.
«With this program of interventions – declared the metropolitan mayor Federico Basile – we want to concretely improve the safety and efficiency of the provincial road network, an essential infrastructure for daily mobility, tourism and the local economy. After years of scarcity of resources, we are finally giving citizens safer and more passable roads, also contributing to the prevention of hydrogeological risk.”
«The tenders that will start in the next few weeks – added the general director Giuseppe Campagna – represent a decisive operational phase for the extraordinary maintenance of the provincial network. The interventions aim at the most critical points, with an approach that respects the environment and is oriented towards the durability of the works”.
